Over $691K drained from victims’ wallets after Vitalik Buterin’s X account is hacked

After the breach of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s Twitter account, victims reportedly suffered losses exceeding $691,000 due to a malicious link promoting a fake free NFT. The incident led to Buterin’s father announcing the hack and the deletion of the fraudulent post. The hacker shared a link to a supposed free commemorative NFT, which resulted in victims connecting their wallets and losing all their funds. Ethereum developer Bok Khoo also claimed losses in his CryptoPunk NFT collection. The prevailing floor price for a CryptoPunk NFT is approximately $76,837. Prominent blockchain investigator ZachXBT has been informing his followers about the hacker’s activities, revealing that the most valuable NFT stolen was worth approximately $250,543. Some users criticized Buterin for not implementing sufficient security measures, but ZachXBT argued that his high profile makes him susceptible to various hacking attempts.
