Monero’s Community Wallet Suffers Total Loss of Funds Following Attack

The recent security breach of Monero’s community crowdfunding wallet has resulted in the loss of 2,675.73 XMR, worth nearly $460,000. The incident occurred on September 1 but was only disclosed on November 2. The cause and source of the breach remain unidentified. Monero’s Community Crowdfunding System (CCS) funds development proposals from its members, and this attack has had a significant impact on contributors who rely on these funds for essential expenses. The CCS wallet was set up on an Ubuntu system in 2020, alongside a Monero node, and payments were made using a hot wallet on a Windows 10 Pro desktop. Monero’s core team is requesting the General Fund to cover the current liabilities resulting from this breach. There are suspicions that the breach could be related to previous attacks since April, and it is possible that the wallet keys were available online on the Ubuntu server. The compromised Windows machine of one of the developers may have played a role in the breach.
