Worldcoin defies criticism, attracting over 9K users in Argentina within a day

The iris-scanning project by Worldcoin has seen a surge of sign-ups in Argentina, with an average of one user signing up every nine seconds. This resulted in over 9,500 users signing up in a single day in August, setting a record for single-day sign-ups. Argentina is known for its blockchain innovation and crypto adoption, making it a prime location for the project. Worldcoin facilitators are present in 38 different locations in Argentina, with most of them being in Buenos Aires.

Worldcoin is a blockchain-based project that allows individuals to prove their humanness by scanning their irises. Users who verify their humanness are given a “World ID” that can be used to prove they are not a bot or AI program in future applications. The project was founded by Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, who believes that human IDs will be necessary as AI programs become more advanced.

Despite facing criticism from data privacy advocates, many Argentinians are still signing up for World IDs. The surge in sign-ups caused the Worldcoin app to temporarily become the number one app in Argentina’s App Store. However, the project has faced scrutiny for being too centralized and potentially leaking users’ biometric data.

Worldcoin gives new users its native coin, WLD, as a sign-up bonus. Currently, the bonus is 25 WLD, which is worth approximately 10,239.48 Argentine pesos or $29.25 on the open market. The project claims to be fully compliant with all laws and regulations governing biometric data collection and transfer. However, the Argentine government has opened an investigation into Worldcoin’s privacy practices.
